As a final paper of Science Interpreter Training Program at the university of Tokyo, I've finished writing my paper on self-building practices entitled "Is Expert Participation Actually Possible ? : A Case Study on the Self-Building by K. Sakaguchi". The abstract is below:
With the advancement of science and technology and the specialization based on it, discussions on non-experts' participation have been held for more than a quarter century. This paper proposes "expert participation" as a new method to increase the non-expert initiative in technical practices and makes clear its possibilities and problems. This "expert participation" means that the experts partially support non-expert-led practices and is distinguished from "citizen participation" and "user involvement". First, this paper classifies non-experts' involvement in the design and production of familiar products into four groups using novel categories of “play” and “work”. What is particularly important is the difference between the “expert participation” and the case where non-experts partially participate in the expert-led practices with trial and error. In order to examine this difference, we interviewed a self-builder, considering him as an example of a non-expert, and an architect, taking him as an example of an expert. In addition, this paper attempts to clarify the actuality of non-expert initiative and the involvement of experts. Based on the above, this paper finally proposes a communication model that partially transfers authority from non-experts to experts for their well-balanced relationship. |
